Every week, we take a closer look at one particular game, usually because it’s a hidden gem that’s really not getting the love it deserves. Why not give them a go next time you’re in?
This week we’re taking a look at Arkadia.
Not to be confused with Arcadia Quest, Arkadia is a fantastic board game for 2, 3 or 4 players that takes about an hour to play.
In Arkadia, you win by having the most coins at the end of the game. Earning the coins requires several steps, and calls for forward thinking, sneaky manoeuvring and perfect timing. There are some great ‘take that’ moments, too when you can mess with your opponents!
Players play cards to draw building tiles, which are then placed on the board. This placement may then allow them to add ‘workers’ to the board, chunky walls to the castle in the middle, and gain ‘seals’. At just the right time, players will score their seals, exchanging them for coins, all the time trying to minimize their opponents’ opportunities to do the same.
Sure, the board itself is a little drab, but the tiles and little workers look good and it’s great fun building the castle, watching it rise from the middle. But the biggest thrill is the thinky, timing aspect – playing just the right cards, tiles and workers at just the right time to manipulate the board and give YOU the biggest advantage.
